Otto as bear April 2008

otto bear

This picture reminds me of the Bernstein bears -- we have the book where the father tries to teach his son how to ride, but keeps on wiping out, Roadrunner style. I came off my bike recently so I can relate. The costume is a bit rough and ready, like everything I've been making -- I'm communicating an idea rather than concentrating on craft!

Bunnies lay eggs March 2008

bunnies lay eggs

Another collaborative effort from myself and my almost-five-year-old son. He drew the faces, I whipped around the felt on the sewing machine in a manner that would make my mother quake (actually, I think Otto pushed the pedal) and then afterwards, Otto and I even wrote a book about their adventures -- Otto took the pictures, I laid them out in Indesign.

Designing other people's books March/April 2008

second violins covers

I am in the process of designing more covers -- so far nothing has been confirmed, but I have been fun creating a Man Ray/New Zealand visual language.

Waste not want not April 2008

flax mat

I couldn't sleep -- the Ti kouka leaves kept tapping at my window like finger nails. So I took to in with the scissors. Now the poor tree looks like it has a mullet (short at the front, long at the back) but I tried to make up to it by weaving the shorn flax into a mat. As I did it, I had fantasies about living on a Maori pa.
